Try this website. I always use this site for creating simple sounds like shooting, pick up etc.

Always check licensing of every individual clip. You don't want to get in trouble further down the line.

I've dealt with Sound Rangers in the past for stock audio. They're reasonably priced, have a no-nonsense license, and a good selection of sounds.

A few more sources of stock audio:

  • sounddogs.com (I've bought one or two effects from them)
  • soundeffects.com
  • Tommy Tallarico

Some free music sites:

  • musopen (I've used some classical recordings from them)
  • open music archive
  • Kevin Macleod (his site mentions some of his stuff has shown up in iPhone games)

Finally, here's a friend of mine who specializes in game audio - composition, effects, and voice recording:

  • Tom Hite Sound

"This site requires flash." This post was in 2009, and I think that friend of yours hasn't updated his site since then either. I haven't seen "this site requires flash" in years.
