Question by moghes · Apr 27, 2016 at 09:33 AM · answersanswers.unity3d.com

Unity answers " 80 people are following this question" ?

Hello everyone,

does this mean 80 people are online viewing / reading the question, or opened the question and clicked the follow button?

since I posted and after 5 min I saw 60 or 80 people are following, just to check opened another question a few older and it had 5 people following, that didn't sound logic.

So any clarification please :)

Each user has the ability to follow certain topics. If you post a question with a particular topic/keyword, all users that follow that topic will automatically "follow" the question. Go to:

 Profile-> Edit Notifications

Means they clicked the button. So one of your questions is more interesting than the other ^_^

EDIT: I was wrong with this answer. As some other people pointed, is the preferences system who puts people to follow a new question. Sorry!

thanks! so much active community it means, 80 follows in a few $$anonymous$$utes

I think that's wrong. Number of times it was seen is just "Views." The old system listed Views (right on the front page with all the Qs) but this one doesn't.

Following means following as a technical term on the site. There are settings for when you follow a question, and you can check to follow/unfollow (the box mid-right column on this page.) I think $$anonymous$$eet5000 is correct about how the numbers get that way -- based on topics, a new Q may instantly get a certain number of follows.

Yeah I see this with questions I literally just published. Its the notification system in which people are notified of questions within their chosen specialities. Auto-subscription I guess.

By the way, Site questions go in the META space.

No it's bull$hit, Uroba for example is present on every "follower" lists. Unity has added this "followers" feature to reduce "alienation" situation with the forum. But I don't blame them, as this is what made them such a community-strong system.

Let those followers be, but just know that they are fake and are only placed there to "make you believe help is on the way, even if there might be none"

Seems unlikely.

Unity Answers wants new users to think help is not on the way. We want them to read the entire manual; search for previous Qs; learn 3D modeling, program$$anonymous$$g and such from existing resources. Up until $$anonymous$$ay '15, we rejected all novice Qs (the Help Room was added because it took too much time to reject them - hopefully it would shunt them away.)

A forum like this is supposed to be impersonal. If you have an Answer, reply with just the answer. Otherwise don't. I think in the Forums section, people tend to be a little chattier.

Being able to have Followers is just of feature of the 3rd party software running this. Unity Co didn't do anything special to add it.
